ABOUT ME

Hi, I'm Raesin (pronounced "raisin").  I'm an autistic science nerd who is fueled by curiosity, desserts, and a million sources of inspiration.

In my spare time, I write, research oddball things, knit, and gobble up good books and podcasts.  One of my goals is to help change the way people think about chronic pain, pain management, and autism.

Photo description:  I'm sitting on a couch on a Sunday during daylight hours, looking somewhat serious though I wasn't feeling that way.  I have short, curly hair, brown skin, and freckles, and am wearing an orange and white striped sweater and tinted glasses.

AUTISM-RELATED RESOURCES
Last updated 27 February 2018

Many autism-related resources exist.  Here are a few I'm glad I found.

Web Communities

Autism Women's Network
"
Our goal is to dispel stereotypes and misinformation which perpetuate unnecessary fears surrounding an autism diagnosis. We seek to share information which works to build acceptance and understanding of disability."

Wrong Planet
"Wrong Planet is the web community designed for individuals (and parents / professionals of those) with Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, ADHD, PDDs, and other neurological differences. We provide a discussion forum, where members communicate with each other, an article section, with exclusive articles and how-to guides, a blogging feature, and more."

Organizations in the United States

Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN)
"The Autistic Self Advocacy Network seeks to advance the principles of the disability rights movement with regard to autism. ASAN believes that the goal of autism advocacy should be a world in which autistic people enjoy equal access, rights, and opportunities. We work to empower autistic people across the world to take control of our own lives and the future of our common community, and seek to organize the autistic community to ensure our voices are heard in the national conversation about us. Nothing About Us, Without Us!"

Commonwealth Autism
"Commonwealth Autism's mission is to build the capacity of the autism and developmental disability service provider network through leadership, innovation, example, and collaboration."

Why isn't Autism speaks listed?
I intentionally excluded Autism Speaks from this list of resources because I don't support their mission, their use of tragic language about autism, or their research initiatives.   I invite you to do your own research on Autism Speaks and form your own opinion. Read why Aspergian author John Elder Robison resigned from his roles at Autism Speaks in his blog post.

Videos
Amythest Schaber's YouTube Channel
Amythest Schaber has produced wonderfully informative videos about being autistic.   In fact, their videos were instrumental in my decision to get assessed for autism.  (Thanks, Amythest!) Amythest also has a blog.

PROJECTS

07/13/2017
My essay about trying to work while under the influence of migraine medications was posted today on The Mighty.  The original title was Stephen Hawking Didn't Mention This Dimension, but the editors changed it to appeal to a wider audience.

07/11/2017
I just received my copy of All the Weight of Our Dreams: On Living Racialized Autism and plan to write about how great it is when I'm done.  I made it through the preface, foreword, and intro and am already grateful to have this book in my collection.
